This mahogany carver armchair is designed in the George III style, featuring a shield-influenced back with a shaped top rail. The back is inset with a decorative pierced splat, which is centred by a carved patera. The chair is designed with out-scrolled open arms on shaped supports. It is fitted with a drop-in seat upholstered in a hand-worked needlepoint tapestry. The tapestry design displays a central cartouche depicting two birds surrounded by floral and foliate motifs, worked in shades of green, yellow, and pink against a dark brown ground. The mahogany frame is supported by square-section tapering legs, which are joined by a central H-stretcher for reinforcement. The construction utilizes standard joinery techniques. No maker’s marks, stamps, or labels are visible.
