A Victorian nursing armchair of spoon-back form, constructed with a carved walnut frame. The balloon-shaped back is decorated with a foliate-carved cresting rail. The open arms feature upholstered pads, or manchettes, and are supported by moulded uprights. The chair is raised on cabriole front legs with foliate-carved knees and scroll feet, terminating in brass casters, and plain out-swept rear legs. The piece is upholstered in a dark brown velvet fabric, with the backrest featuring deep-buttoned diamond tufting. The upholstery is bordered with a matching braided gimp trim. This chair exhibits characteristic Rococo Revival design elements from the mid-to-late 19th century.
