An antique Victorian mantel clock of architectural form. The case is constructed from black slate, accented with panels and columns of red-marbled stone, likely rouge marble. The design features a triangular pediment top decorated with an etched foliate scroll motif, flanked by scrolling side brackets. Below the pediment, a row of quatrefoil-style carvings sits above a central section where two pairs of rouge marble columns flank the dial. The clock stands on a stepped base, with the lower section featuring further etched scrollwork and the middle section containing a series of vertical recessed mouldings. The dial consists of a white enamel chapter ring with black Roman numerals, set around a recessed brass or gilt-metal centre with two winding apertures. The rear of the clock reveals a mechanical twin-train movement striking on a coiled wire gong. A circular stamp is present on the rear brass movement plate, though the maker’s name is not clearly legible.
