An oblong folio volume containing a series of twenty engraved plates illustrating Charles Kingsley’s historical novel, “Hereward the Wake”. The illustrations were designed by Henry Courtney Selous and engraved by Charles George Lewis, published by the Art-Union of London in 1870. The work is bound in the publisher’s maroon pebbled cloth with a gilt-stamped title and blind-tooled decorative borders on the upper board. The title page features printed facsimile signatures of the author, illustrator, and engraver. Each plate is accompanied by a printed caption referencing the corresponding passage in Kingsley’s text. A four-page Art-Union of London prospectus, dated 1867, is loosely inserted within the volume, detailing subscription terms and membership benefits for that year.
