A utilitarian clerk’s standing desk or counting-house desk, characteristic of school or office furniture from the late Victorian or Edwardian period. The piece is constructed from pine with a dark stain or black paint finish. It features a slanted, hinged wooden top that opens on simple metal butt hinges to reveal a single, deep storage compartment. The underside of the lid is reinforced with two wooden battens. The interior base and sides show significant historical blue and purple ink staining. The desk is raised on four square-section legs that taper slightly towards the feet. Faint, illegible markings in what appears to be pencil or chalk are present on the interior back panel and the underside of the lid.
