An early 20th-century His Master’s Voice (The Gramophone Company Ltd.) Model 103 tabletop mechanical gramophone. The dark-stained wooden cabinet, likely oak, features a hinged lid and two front-opening doors providing access to the internal horn and acting as a manual volume control. Identification is provided by a circular gold-toned label on the motor board inscribed His Master’s Voice Model 103. The underside of the lid displays a polychrome transfer of the Nipper dog logo with text for His Master’s Voice and The Gramophone Company Ltd. Patents Applied For. The unit is fitted with a metal tonearm and soundbox. The gramophone is sold together with a collection of shellac 78rpm records housed in a green plastic crate. Labels present within the collection include His Master’s Voice, Columbia, Regal, Regal Zonophone, Paxton, and Brunswick. Notable recordings include Sanctuary of the Heart by Peter Dawson and selections from the Rose Marie soundtrack. Many records are contained within period paper sleeves.
