This 20th-century British military fife or small flute is constructed from a dark hardwood, likely African blackwood or grenadilla. The instrument features a traditional T-shaped head joint, five brass keys mounted on pillars with flat circular pads, and six finger holes along the body. It is fitted with brass ferrules at the ends and two white synthetic rings. The wooden body is stamped with several marks including H. POTTER BROWNE, LONDON, the broad arrow military property symbol, and the manufacture date 1965. This pattern of instrument was typically issued to drummers in British Army regiments.
