This work is an oil on canvas reproduction after the eighteenth-century masterpiece by Jean-Honoré Fragonard titled A Young Girl Reading. The composition depicts a young woman in profile, wearing a saffron-yellow dress and a white ruff collar, reclining against a cushion while reading a small book. The brushwork is smooth and characteristic of mid-twentieth-century commercial decorative copies. The painting is set within a substantial gilt-finished composite frame featuring a beaded inner slip and wide, stepped outer mouldings. The reverse of the wooden stretcher bar is stamped with 150 A Young Girl Reading and the name Fragonard. A large blue ink stamp on the back of the canvas identifies the manufacturer as THOMAS RUDDEN LTD. and includes the text INSTAFRAME WITH MILHURST INTERLOCKING CORNERS along with U.K. PAT. No. 107966S.
