The spines feature gilt horizontal bands and gilt-stamped lettering. Transcribed text on the spines includes THE OLD WEST at the top and specific volume titles in the centre. The Time-Life Books logo is present at the base of each spine. Observable titles include The Townsmen, The Gunfighters, The Scouts, The Miners, The Forty-Niners, The Chroniclers, The Pioneers, The Loggers, The Expressmen, The Cowboys, The Women, The Frontiersmen, The Railroaders, The Alaskans, The Trailblazers, The Ranchers, The Texans, The Gamblers, The End and the Myth, The Great Chiefs, The Soldiers, The Mexican War, The Canadians, The Indians, The Spanish West, and The Rivermen. These volumes are presented in a large quarto format. No dust jackets were issued for this series.
