A pair of original narrative illustrations by the artist Barry Wilkinson, executed in watercolour and gouache on board. These works were commissioned for the BBC television series Jackanory and feature characteristic mid-20th-century British illustrative styling. The first illustration, in a vertical format, depicts a blonde-haired child being pulled from a pool of water by a second child on an embankment using a wooden bow. The second illustration, in a horizontal format, shows two children on a grassy embankment edge; one child wears a red jumper and cap with equipment strapped to their back, while the other child in a striped shirt and cap looks downwards holding a wooden bow.
The verso of the boards contains significant production inscriptions and manufacturer marks. Both pieces are inscribed in purple ink with Jackanory Boards for TV. Barry Wilkinson. Technical television production notations in ink and pencil include PART 2, CAP. 22, CAM. 2, SHOT 28 on one board, and PART 2, CAP. 24, CAM. 4, SHOT 31 on the other. The boards bear the printed green manufacturer’s mark for C.S. 2 The original H.P. Surface Colour Wash Board, Frisk, LONDON England.
