Start price: £5

Buyer's Premium:

A decorative wall hanging or plaque fashioned from a long section of split natural bamboo. The convex exterior surface is deeply hand-carved with calligraphic characters in a fluid cursive style (sosho or gyosho), executed using the senbori (incised) technique. To the far left, two columns of smaller characters are present, likely representing the artist’s signature and a reference to their age; the characters 七 (seven) and 十 (ten) are discernible, which typically indicates the work was produced in the artist’s seventieth year. The carved recesses retain a natural wood tone that contrasts with the aged yellow-beige patina of the bamboo skin. The reverse is hollowed, following the natural form of the bamboo stalk, and the ends are cut to reveal the fibrous cross-section. Pieces of this nature are traditionally displayed in a tokonoma (alcove) or tea room.
