A pair of First World War miniature coal scuttles or scoops, examples of trench art repurposed from spent artillery shell casings. Each scuttle is constructed from a brass shell casing that has been cut and shaped into a scoop form. The items feature hinged swing handles and are mounted on three decorative cast brass feet secured with rivets.
The first scuttle is fabricated from a German shell casing. The base bears stamped markings including the date FEBR 1916, the digits 9 and 60, and the characters st and NDr.
The second scuttle is fabricated from a British Commonwealth shell casing. The base is stamped with 13 PR indicating a 13-pounder shell, alongside a broad arrow British government mark. Manufacturer stamps include D C P C L T D, identifying the Dominion Copper Products Co. Ltd. of Montreal, Canada, and the letters E C B. The base is further marked with the date 1917 and additional military stamps including 17 4 17, 304 U, C.F. (Cordite Filled), and Z. The side of this scuttle features a decorative etched ribbon banner containing the initials A C B.
