Buyer's Premium:

A Japanese Satsuma pottery tile panel comprising six rectangular earthenware tiles arranged in two rows of three, mounted within a gilt-wood frame. The central scene depicts two figures in traditional courtly attire, likely representing characters from classical literature, wearing elaborate kimonos decorated with intricate brocade patterns. The decoration is executed using polychrome enamels and extensive moriage raised gilding. One figure is depicted holding a folding fan, while the second carries a flower basket. The figures are set against a dark, mottled tea-dust glazed ground. The panel contains several specific markings: a horizontal rectangular cartouche in the upper right reading 山下製 (Yamashita-sei); a vertical inscription reading 薩摩 (Satsuma) accompanied by a circular 吉 (Kichi) mark; a signature in the bottom right corner reading 華山畫 (Kazan-ga); and the Shimazu family crest in the bottom left corner. A larger embossed rectangular cartouche containing six characters is located in the upper right quadrant.
