A mid-20th-century still life composition executed in watercolour and gouache on paper. The work depicts a scholarly arrangement of objects including a green-shaded brass desk lamp, a stack of leather-bound books, an open portfolio displaying sketches, a pair of wire-rimmed spectacles, a smoking pipe, and a bouquet of peacock feathers. The piece is signed F. Bacon vertically in the upper right. The painting is housed in a gilt-finished wooden frame with a white mount and is set under glass. The reverse of the frame carries extensive provenance documentation in the form of several printed labels. These labels, from the printing firm Burall Brothers Limited of Wisbech, identify the artist as Frederick Fred Bacon, who worked as a designer for the company from 1935 until his death in 1956. The documentation notes the painting was a gift from the artist’s widow and was later rediscovered in the company’s dispatch office.
